Safeway gas stations on renewable energy

Print Comment
ROSEBURG: Safeway has announced plans to purchase 100 percent renewable energy to power all its fuel stations, including one in Roseburg.

Safeway has 270 fuel stations throughout the United States. Safeway has agreed to purchase 78 million kilowatt hours of wind energy to run them all.

The company has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to become one of the largest buyers of renewable energy in the country.

The EPA estimates Safeway's purchase will lead to the equivalent of avoiding more than 85 million pounds of carbon dioxide, comparable to planing more than 10,500 acres of trees, according to a Safeway press release.

Safeway's Roseburg fuel station is at 539 N.E. Stephens St.
