Roseburg, Winston, Reedsport, Myrtle Creek host free music, shows all summer long

<b>POODLE CREEK PICKERS</b> — 6:30 p.m., Umpqua Discovery Center, 409 Riverfront Way, Reedsport. The family band will perform a blend of bluegrass, country and old-time American favorites. Based west of Eugene, the group features guitar, mandolin, banjo and bass accompanied by fiddling and vocals. The free event is part of the Riverfront Rhythms concert Series. (541) 271-4816.

<b>MIKE STRICKLAND</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park, Roseburg. Pianist and composer Mike Strickland presents a hybrid of jazz and popular music. In the last 20 years, he has performed extensively around the country as a solo artist and with various groups. The free concert is part of the ongoing Music on the Half Shell concert series. <b>BAABA MAAL</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park, Roseburg. Baaba Maal returns for his second Roseburg appearance. He is also known as “The Nightingale” because of his clear high-pitched voice. Born in Senegal, Maal sings in Pulaar, the language of the nomadic Fula ethnic group. The free concert is part of the ongoing Music on the Half Shell concert series. <b>LITTLE FEAT</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park, Roseburg. The band perform as part of Roseburg’s Fourth of July celebration. Little Feat’s music is described as a freewheeling fusion of Californian rock and Dixie-inflected funk-boogie. The free concert is part of the ongoing Music on the Half Shell concert series. <b>JOE JUSTIN AND JANET KAY HERRING</b> — 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Millsite Park, Myrtle Creek. The two will open Myrtle Creek’s Music in the Park season. The pair have played at Music in the Park for many years and are famous for their classic country songs and yodeling. The free event is a part of the Music in the Park concert series. 863-5032.

<b>RAY CHARLES TRIBUTE</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Riverbend Park, Winston. The show combines the talents of musicians from around the Northwest music community, featuring players from jazz, R&B, soul and blues, including Patrick Lamb, Sweet Baby James Benton and Linda Hornbuckle. <b>CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park, Roseburg. Charlie Musselwhite is one of the greatest harmonica players of all time. He is a link between the 1960s flowering of blues music and the modern direction it has taken since. The free concert is part of the ongoing Music on the Half Shell concert series. <b>VARIETY SHOW</b> — 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Millsite Park, Myrtle Creek. Mike Rondeau, Kay Anderson, Gloria McGinnis, Max Roberts, Patti Coker and Janal Kingry will perform a variety of songs and duets. All have entertained throughout Douglas County and the state. The free event is a part of the Music in the Park concert series. 863-5032.

MUMBO GUMBO</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Riverbend Park, Winston. The band was the first to perform at Riverbend Live! Concert Series 10 years ago. The group performs a blend of many musical styles with a thread of New Orleans rhythm and blues woven through it — hence, the name Mumbo Gumbo. The free event is part of the Riverbend Live! concert series. 679-9732.

<b>AMBROSIA</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park, Roseburg. The musicians were inspired by the progressive rock era and developed a large regional following for their inventive musicianship and skillful arranging. <b>‘THE DISASTERNAUGHTS’</b> — 7 p.m., Riverbend Park, Winston. Della Harp and her drama team will work with area youth to produce the children’s theater show. Children will star in the drama that highlights a group of misfit astronauts who must save Earth from aliens and a rogue planet. <b>LEO KOTTKE</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park, Roseburg. Leo Kottke is an innovative guitar virtuoso. Kottke’s powerful technique combined with his prolific output have drawn admiration from guitarists around the world. The free concert is part of the ongoing Music on the Half Shell concert series. <b>COWBOY POETRY WITH DR. BAXTER BLACK</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Riverbend Park, Winston. The night will feature cowboy poetry and Western music. The cowboy poet and humorist Gary McMahan will return with his world-class singing and yodeling while Baxter Black will entertain with his “true” stories and poems about his life as a large animal veterinarian and cowboy. <b>BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park, Roseburg. The group revived big band music for the 1990s. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy performed at Super Bowl XXXIII with Stevie Wonder and Gloria Estefan and had their music used in more than 60 films and TV shows. The free concert is part of the ongoing Music on the Half Shell concert series. <b>SOUTH COUNTY COMMUNITY CHOIR </b>— 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Millsite Park, Myrtle Creek. Director Arnold Erickson, piano accompanist Carol Hall and Judy Brahm will perform patriotic and show tune songs plus much more. The free event is a part of the Music in the Park concert series. 863-5032.

<b>SKA CUBANO</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Riverbend Park, Winston. The group performs a mixture of Cuban and Caribbean music. Performers Nathan Lerner (Natty Bo), Eddie “Tan Tan” Thornton and Megumi Mesaku combine talents to create a unique blend of Jamaican and Cuban ska music. The free event is part of the Riverbend Live! concert series. 679-9732.

<b>LONESTAR</b> — 7 p.m., Douglas County Fairgrounds, Roseburg. While their name sounds Texan, the quintet actually formed in Tennessee in 1992. The group produced the top 10 hit, “Tequila Talkin’.” “Crazy Nights” followed in 1997, and Lonestar later released “Lonely Grill”, featuring the hit “Amazed.” A free bus shuttle will be offered from many sites throughout the county. General admission concert seating is free by purchasing tickets to the fair. Fair admission is $8 for adults and $3 for children; tickets bought before fair week are $6 for adults and $2 for children. Reserved seats cost $20. <b>ALICE COOPER</b> — 7 p.m., Douglas County Fairgrounds, Roseburg. Over 40 years, 30 albums and some of the most infamous rock songs ever recorded, Cooper’s hits include “School’s Out,” “I’m Eighteen” and “No More Mr. Nice Guy.” A free bus shuttle will be offered from many sites throughout the county. <b>KENNY LOGGINS</b> — 7 p.m., Douglas County Fairgrounds, Roseburg. Loggins became known as the king of the movie soundtrack songs, earning Top 10 hits with “I’m Alright” from “Caddyshack,” the theme to “Footloose,” and “Danger Zone” from “Top Gun.” A free bus shuttle will be offered from many sites throughout the county. <b>SHeDAISY</b> — 7 p.m., Douglas County Fairgrounds, Roseburg. Sisters Kristyn, Kelsi, and Kassidy Osborn began performing as young girls at neighborhood shows in Magna, Utah. Their 1999 debut album, “The Whole Shebang,” gave the group a breakthrough single with “Little Good-Byes,” which went to number three on the country charts. <b>ETTA JAMES</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park, Roseburg. The R&B and soul pioneer has been nominated for six Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2003 she got her gold star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She is well known for tunes “At Last” and “If I Can’t Have You.” The free concert is part of the ongoing Music on the Half Shell concert series. BILL EVANS SOULGRASS</b> — 7 to 9 p.m., Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park, Roseburg. Throughout Bill Evans’ 20-year career as a solo artist, the multi-Grammy nominated saxophonist has blended jazz, funk and roots music into a seamless mix of American styles. The free concert is part of the ongoing Music on the Half Shell concert series.
