Insurers unfairly use credit reports

In 2002, my wife and I signed up for car insurance through a senior citizen's group. In 2003, our premium went up 15 percent. I was unable to get an explanation for the increase from the company. Last year we downgraded full coverage to just liability on one of our vehicles. Our premium for 2007 stayed the same as 2006. We received no reduction for the downgrade on the vehicle.

My one and only moving violation was 48 years ago and I have not had a chargeable accident. I sent an e-mail to the senior citizen group complaining about what I thought was an unfair situation. The insurance company called me to explain why my premiums were high. While I knew they used credit reports in determining their fees, I was unaware they were still using our 2002 credit report. The insurance representative said they do not look at it again once they have set their criteria. Our credit score is in the good category.

Everyone should contact their insurer and ask what information from your credit report has been used to determine your insurance premium. After my inquiry my premium was dropped by 18 percent.

We need to vote &quot;yes&quot; on Measure 42 so that insurance companies discontinue their use of credit reports in determining insurance premiums.
