Third time not a charm for Tribe

Print Comment
It was there for the taking, but the Roseburg High girls basketball team couldn’t come up with the big shots when it needed them most Tuesday against first-place Sheldon.

After trimming a seven-point deficit to two at 33-31 early in the fourth quarter, the Indians went ice cold from the floor and scored just four points over the final 6:30 of the game.

The Irish, on the other hand, scorched the net for 16 points down the stretch, taking a 49-35 Southwest Conference win at Robertson Memorial Gym.

“We came out ready to play, and our effort was much better than the first two times we played them,” Roseburg junior point guard Katie Wilton said.
“We just had a few breakdowns on defense and didn’t make our open looks. Sheldon is a good team and they will take advantage of those things.”

The Indians’ recent offensive woes continued Tuesday with a 15-of-52 (28 percent) shooting effort from the field. Sheldon wasn’t much better — 17 of 44 (38 percent) — but it was good enough in crunch time.

The Irish (19-6, 13-2 SWC) helped themselves by making 7 of 8 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter and finishing 12 of 13 (92 percent) for the game.

“We played them pretty tough in the first half, but shooting 28 percent isn’t going to get it done,” Roseburg senior Tracy Filley said. “We all wanted this game really bad, but they seemed to score every time they touched the ball in the fourth quarter. It’s hard to lose this way on Senior Night.”

Wilton led the Tribe with 12 points and three assists, while Filley, Beth Fuller and Julie Piper each scored six points.

Kristi Fallin added five points and Fuller pulled down nine rebounds, helping Roseburg outrebound the Irish, 28-27.
The Indians (18-6, 10-5) also played effective defense on the SWC’s leading scorer, Kendra Little, holding her to just six points.

But in the end, it was the Indians’ offense that came up short.

“We missed a lot of open looks that would have changed the entire complexion of the game,” Roseburg coach Jeff Thomas said.
“We defended well all night and forced other players besides Little to score. But missing as many easy shots as we did changed everything. It really affected our confidence and we never got it back.”

Junior post Theresa Brown led the Irish with 13 points, while Katie Steigelman and Taylor Ward added nine apiece.

With the win, Sheldon won the conference championship outright, and will host a second-round Class 6A state playoff game on March 2.

The Indians finished third behind Sheldon and North Medford, and will host the No. 3 seed from the Portland Interscholastic League — either Wilson or Benson — next Tuesday.

“We know we have one more chance at home, and we’re looking forward to taking out our frustrations on someone,” Filley said. “Our goal is still the same. We want to get to the state tournament and be one of the last teams standing.”
