Blanchet Catholic knocks out Glendale

GLENDALE — Despite a large number of hits, Glendale ran into the Blanchet Catholic buzzsaw known as the Belleque sisters.

Jessica, Kristin and Rene Belleque went a combined 5-for-9 at the plate with two home runs and six RBIs, as the Cavaliers downed the Pirates, 7-1, Tuesday in the second round of the Class 2A/1A state playoffs.

“We finished the season with a 24-2 record. It’s pretty hard to be discouraged by that,” Glendale coach Andy Owens said. “We intended on being there in Corvallis on June 2. We didn’t end up with any trophies, but we aren’t disgusted by it.”

Jessica, a senior, went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, including Blanchet’s first hit of the game, a solo homer in the fourth inning. Rene had an RBI single two batters later and Kristin hit a three-run homer the next at-bat. The homers started and ended a stretch of five straight batters reaching base.

The Cavs host Nestucca on Friday, the No. 1 team from District 1, in the quarterfinals.

“(Jessica) just did a good job hitting as did the sixth and seventh place hitters,” Owens said. “They were just able to string some hits together.”

Pirate pitcher Gretchen Owens struck out 10 batters, but the Cavaliers were just able to hit the ball where Glendale wasn’t standing. First baseman Ashley Marriott went 3-for-4 with three singles. Jen Muduzia and Jenna Henry each hit a double.

Candyce Tate drove in the lone run in the second inning with a single to score Rori Lovemark, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. It turned out to be the last game for seniors Tate, Andria Poore and Nicole Maupin.

“Gretchen just couldn’t mow them all down and pitch a no-hitter,” Owens said. “She did pretty good in the circle, but they were just hitting the ball where we weren’t at.”

Glendale had plenty of opportunities to get some runs on the board and didn’t. In total, the Pirates stranded 10 runners on base, including a stretch of three straight innings of leaving runners on base in scoring position.

“We had some good shots (at scoring) ourselves, but we hit them right at people. That is just how the ball bounced today,” Owens said. “They had nothing to lose and just came in and had fun. The same thing happened to us against Monroe.”
