News-Review editor named publisher in Colorado

Print Comment
Bart Smith, editor of The News-Review for the past 14 years, today was named publisher of The Greeley (Colo.) Tribune.

Smith will also oversee La Tribuna, a weekly Spanish-language newspaper, as well as other print publications in the Greeley market.

Smith came to The News-Review in 1993, after working as an editor and publisher on daily, twice-weekly and weekly newspapers in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.

“Bart is one of the finest newspaper people I know,” News-Review Publisher Mark Raymond said. “His work in Roseburg has won him and the newspaper a reputation for excellence throughout the Northwest. This is a wonderful opportunity for him.”

In Greeley today for the announcement, Smith said that it took an incredible opportunity to lure him and his family from Roseburg. He said the chance to step up into the lead role on a newspaper with a great reputation in a competitive market was too tempting to pass up.

As publisher, he will have overall responsibility for all the operations of the seven-day a week newspaper with a circulation of about 25,000.

The daily newspaper is owned by Swift Communications, the parent company of The News-Review.

Smith said he felt comfortable he was leaving The News-Review’s newsroom in capable hands.

“We’ve built a great team over the years of some seasoned pros, coupled with young talent,” he said.

“That has helped us increase our circulation at a time when newspapers are facing increasing competition. It’s been gratifying to see that growth at a time when our Web site, newsreview.info, is growing rapidly, also.

In the last decade, The News-Review has built a strong reputation for quality. It recently was named the top daily newspaper in its category in Oregon, an award it has claimed seven of the past 11 years. In all, it won 25 awards in the state contest, including 10 first place awards. Two of those went to Smith for editorial writing and column writing.

The News-Review newsroom staff has also been recognized for its strengths with annual Swift Communications awards, including the 2006 editorial integrity award handed out recently.

“It’s gong to be so hard for us to leave Roseburg after all these wonderful years,” Smith said.

Smith’s wife, Judy, a kindergarten teacher at Rose Elementary School, plans to move to Colorado by the end of the year. They will be joined by their daughter, Dorothy, a student at Umpqua Community College. Their older daughter, Jessica, is living and working abroad.
Vicki Menard steps up as new editor
Vicki Menard, who has served as The News-Review’s city editor for the past eight years, was today named the paper’s editor.

She will lead the news coverage and supervise the newsroom’s 23 employees, including reporters, photographers, the Sports department, news clerks and online staff.

“Our readers should be delighted with Vicki’s promotion,” Publisher Mark Raymond said. “She has been a central figure in managing our award-winning local news coverage and she is exceptionally familiar with the community. She has been preparing for this position for the past few years and has helped build a very strong local team.”

A native Oregonian, Menard first joined the staff of The News-Review as a college intern in July 1983.

She became a full-time reporter upon receiving her bachelor’s degree in technical journalism from Oregon State University in the summer of 1986.

She covered a variety of beats including the city of Roseburg, county government, education, lifestyles and more. She was also the newspaper’s Food editor.

She has won at least a dozen state, regional and national journalism awards.

Menard is a graduate of Glide High School and makes her home in Glide with her family.

She succeeds Bart Smith, who was named publisher of the Greeley, (Colo.) Tribune.

Stepping into the city editor’s position is Christian Bringhurst, who has been the newspaper’s assistant city editor and Web editor for the past two years.

Prior to that, he was a reporter for three years, covering the crime and courts beats.

Bringhurst, who earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern Oregon University in Ashland, has also been recognized with statewide awards for enterprise, spot news and religion coverage and column writing.

Bringhurst and his family live in Winston.
