Print Comment
ROSEBURG: The eighth annual Earth Day and Energy Fair is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 19 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Anyone interested in or learning about the use of natural resources is invited to attend this free event. Exhibits and hands-on displays will focus on topics such as reusable and recycled products, energy conservation, wildlife, native plants, growing organic, crafts from trash, alternative fuel vehicles, building and gardening practices, hazardous waste management and more. There will be storytelling, a used clothing fashion show, food, live music, giveaways and demonstrations.

Prizes will be awarded to anyone who walks or bicycles to the event.

A student poetry competition also is planned as part of the event. Douglas County students ages 6 to 18 are invited to submit any form of poetry to a librarian at the nearest public library. The six categories are: Nature and Wildlife; Conservation; Water, Energy and Resources; Seasons; Mother Earth and Recycling. Poetry is being accepted at all public libraries in Douglas County until April 4. Leave your work with the librarian. Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges. The authors of the top selections in each category will receive prizes and read their work at this year’s Earth Day and Energy Fair.

Information: 440-4350 for the event, 440-4437 for the poetry contest.
