Someone could have been nailed

Print Comment
For the several years, I have been volunteering to work with Charter Communications to put up and take down pole banners in the city of Winston. Yesterday, as we were almost finished replacing the Celtic Highland Games banners with Welcome to Winston banners, I noticed a Pacific Power pole that held the banner had nails sticking out on the sidewalk side of the pole.

Many were sticking out two inches.

These went from about six feet above the sidewalk, down to about two or three feet. These had been used to hold garage sale signs, etc.

If someone had ridden a bicycle or walked by that pole, and for some reason, happened to brush the pole, they very likely would have been severely scratched.

I believe it is against the law to nail signs on utility poles, but if people insist on doing it, they need to remove the nails after the event, and even more important, they need to be sure the nails don’t stick out from the pole.

Better yet, don’t use utility poles for this purpose.

If I were a utility worker who happened to be injured by a nail, I would sure sue anyone who had an unauthorized sign on that pole.
