YONCALLA — Yoncalla snapped a 10-game losing streak and made J.J. Mast a winner in his first game coaching his alma mater with a 35-18 victory over Rogue River Friday night.

The Eagles rushed for 274 yards as a team and held Class 3A Rogue River to negative 30 yards. Heath Anson led the way with 141 yards and two touchdowns.

“They had us outweighed by about 25 to 30 pounds at every position, but didn’t let them get the best of them,” Mast said. “It was a scrappy and very consistent performance by them.”

Two of the Chieftains’ three touchdowns came on special teams as Rogue Barman and John Jessie returned kickoffs immediately after Yoncalla scores. Christian Johnson threw a 51-yard TD pass to John Humphries in the fourth quarter for Rogue River, which has lost 28 straight games dating back to the 2005 season opener.

Kyle Whiting, Blake Randall and Colton Kingery added touchdowns for the Eagles.

North Douglas 27
Crow 20

DRAIN — North Douglas held off a fourth-quarter comeback attempt by Crow in a non-league game played using both eight- and 11-man rules.

Cameron Derrick’s 33-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Hicks gave North Douglas a 19-0 lead with 51 seconds left in the first quarter, and Mason Colburn’s second TD run — a 41-yard sprint — made in 27-6 in favor of the home team.

But the Cougars scored twice in the fourth quarter, with R.C. Dearth’s third TD of the day and subsequent two-point conversion pulled Crow within seven with 2:17 to play.

“It turned out to be a closer game in the and that what it appeared,” North Douglas coach James Shelton said. “Playing an eight-man team is always risky. A couple of big plays and it was a game again.”

Jake Rice finished with 120 yards rushing with a touchdown and Derrick was 7-for-12 passing with 139 yards. Dearth had 134 all-purpose yards for Crow.

Reedsport 36
Oakland 21

OAKLAND — Reedsport’s Jason Fegles filled in nicely for injured quarterback Adam Chase, throwing for 123 yards and a pair of touchdown passes while spoiling Oakland’s season opener.

Nathan Adams’ 8-yard rushing touchdown and Ethan Sweeden’s 5-yard run for a score left the Oakers trailing just 20-12 at halftime. Cory Christoffersen and Sean Horton caught TD passes for the visitors.

Lucas Flint bolted 80 yards for a touchdown off a kickoff return with 1:56 left in the fourth quarter, but the Braves’ two touchdowns in the second half had already sealed the deal.

“It was a tough first game,” Oakland coach Dallas Amer said. “Reedsport came out tough and got after it and never let up defensively.”

Oakland travels to Coos Bay to play the Marshfield junior varsity next Saturday night in a non-league game.

SKYLINE LEAGUE

Days Creek 60
Powers 44

POWERS — Bronson Owens rushed for 184 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns to help the Wolves down the Cruisers in an eight-man Skyline League game.

Brandon Lane added 58 yards rushing on six attempts and scored two TDs and added an 80-yard kickoff return for a score for Days Creek (1-1, 1-0 Skyline). The Wolves compiled 359 yards total offense, 297 coming on the ground.

Kyle Blanton passed for two TDs and ran for two more scores for Powers.

“I don’t feel we’re playing as well as we need to,” said Days Creek coach Gene Forman. “We’re able to move the ball ... I’m pretty pleased with what we’re doing offensively, but we’re not showing a lot of physical play on defense.”

The Wolves will host Butte Falls next Friday in a league contest.

Gilchrist 28
Camas Valley 20

CAMAS VALLEY — Big plays and penalties doomed Camas Valley to a close loss in its Skyline League and season opener.

Matt Erwin caught touchdown passes of 75 and 60 yards from Ryan Stinton and Kyle Kepple recovered a fumble and returned it 29 yards for the Grizzlies.

“It was a very winnable game, but we didn’t do a lot of the little things we need to win close games,” Camas Valley coach Eli Wolfe said.

Ben Carter had a strong game for Camas Valley, rushing for 121 yards on 22 carries and scoring one touchdown. Mike Erwin caught two long TD passes for Gilchrist, which led 14-8 at halftime.

Nick Andreas recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score and Ryan Dancer added a 4-yard TD run for Camas Valley.

The Hornets travel to Elkton Friday for a league game.

NON-LEAGUE

Elmira 15
Douglas 6

WINSTON — Quarterback Brodie Davis ran for two touchdowns and Carlos Real stopped a Douglas fourth quarter drive with an interception as the Falcons spoiled the Trojans’ home opener.

Sky Woods scored the lone touchdown for the Trojans (0-2) with a 24-yard interception return. Elmira’s Dillon Ford was the game’s top rusher with 94 yards and Davis passed for 109 yards.

Douglas finished with 127 yards total offense, with Tyler Clark and Mike Ruppert each running for 30 yards and Paul Polamalu passing for 39. Bryson Norton caught two passes for 25 yards.

“We’ve got some work to do as coaches,” said Douglas coach Joe Polamalu. “We need to make sure the personnel fits our scheme for what we’re trying to do. Just simple things. Our kids are playing hard.”

The Trojans resume non-league play next Friday, visiting 3A Myrtle Point.

Myrtle Point 33
South Umpqua 26

TRI CITY — The Lancers came up short against the 3A Bobcats, dropping the non-league game at Loghry Field.

The Lancers (0-2) fumbled on a late drive and Myrtle Point (2-0) scored four plays later. South Umpqua quarterback Ryan Smedley connected with wide receiver Ky Schoonhoven for a 17-yard touchdown with 56 seconds left for the final score of the contest.

Triton Crane ran in and caught a touchdown and Smedley threw three TD passes, including a 68-yarder to Chris Murphy, and finished 15-for-29 with no interceptions. Kyle Davis had four TD passes for Myrtle Point.

“The kids played hard,” South Umpqua coach Kevin Hubbard said. “It came down to mental mistakes and fumbles and we couldn’t recover.”

The Lancers host Marshall in Friday.
